TSA Cares is a program launched on December 22, 2011, to assist those with disabilities or medical conditions requiring assistance for traveling. {TSA Cares provides passengers with disabilities and medical needs another resource to use before they fly, so they know what to expect when going through the screening process,” said TSA Administrator John Pistole. “This additional level of personal communication helps ensure that even those who do not travel often are aware of our screening policies before they arrive at the airport. When a passenger with a disability or medical condition calls TSA Cares, a representative will assist with either information about screening that is relevant to the passenger’s specific disability or medical condition or the passenger may be referred to disability experts at TSA. Passengers should call approximately 72 hours ahead of travel so that the TSA can coordinate checkpoint support with a Customer Service Manager located at the airport if necessary.} You can read the full press release for the TSA Cares Initiative here.
Also available on the TSA website, found under there special procedures menu, is a page regarding specific information to procedures related to people with Disabilities and Medical Conditions. If you are traveling with a loved one or companion that may find the mandatory screening awkward or uncomfortable, it would be wise to apply for a TSA PreCheck. The cost is $85 for the initial enrollment and is valid for five years. If you have completed the TSA PreCheck, more than 200 airports and sixty-seven airlines will allow you to board without removing your:
- Shoes
- Laptop
- 3-1-1 Liquids
- Belts
- Light Jackets
The TSA PreCheck will make travel less stressful for those with disabilities related to issues such as motor problems (Parkinson’s) or Intellectual (Autism) to name a few. Having to remove clothing and subsequently having to re dress and repack can create a stressful situation for the traveler. In general, if you are a parent traveling with young children, this could make your life easier as well. Those familiar to living with challenges know the power in planning.
Applying for a TSA PreCheck and calling the TSA Cares program before traveling are a couple more strategies you can implement to make your next vacation more enjoyable.
